The Los Angeles Chargers will likely have to wait a while to see their top rookie in action.
Wide receiver Mike Williams, the No. 7 overall pick out of Clemson in April’s NFL draft, was expected to pair with Keenan Allen in the starting lineup. But a lower-back disc herniation left Williams’ status unclear.
“He’s been responding well,” Chargers general manager Tom Telesco told Williams. “The path, right now, is rehab and strengthening. That’s good news, obviously.
“He’ll see our doctors this weekend and will get more of a timetable of where he is.”
If Williams misses all of training camp, it’s likely the Chargers will ease the rookie into the rotation and could hold him out the first few games of the regular season.
Cornerback Jason Verrett and safety Darrell Stuckey were also placed on the physically unable to perform list.
