The Miami Dolphins received an injury scare to their most important player.
Quarterback Ryan Tannehill went down with a non-contact injury during Thursday’s practice. The injury is to the same knee that Tannehill injured last season, forcing him to miss the last three regular season games and playoff game. Tannehill suffered ACL and MCL injuries to that knee and had a stem cell procedure but decided not to get surgery.
Tannehill went down awkwardly after scrambling to the sideline during team drills, in the first hour of practice. He remained on the ground for at least 15 seconds, surrounded by teammates while trainers examined the left knee.
Matt Moore, an 11th-year veteran, went 2-2 as a starter replacing Tannehill last year and remains the backup.
“There’s a reason we have Matt Moore here,” Christensen said.
The Dolphins were already without 1,000-yard rusher Jay Ajayi, sidelined since Monday by a concussion. Their top lineman, center Mike Pouncey, has seen extremely limited activity as he returns from hip surgery.
If Tannehill’s injury leaves the Dolphins in the market to sign another quarterback for depth, candidates include Colin Kaepernick, who parted ways with the San Francisco 49ers in March and remains unsigned.
